Reflection: Shades of Noir
Throughout the lectures in this unit, we were given examples of how Shades of Noir helped students and staff of colour, who had experienced marginalisation and racism during their academic experiences. These examples were quite shocking, which highlighted SoN’s raison d’être and their effectiveness in dealing with crises.
I don’t intend to use SoN as a last resource when shit hits the fan. Of course, I am grateful for their work and would welcome their advice in a moment of crisis. But, I also want to learn how to deal with these situations myself, and most importantly, prevent them from happening in the first place. My proposed uses of Shade of Noir as resource are:
- Introduce Shades of Noir alongside other UAL services (Library, Academic Support, Disability, Chaplain, Technical Support) in Unit One.
- Embed their events into core curriculum of Fashion History and Theory Stage One. That said, I couldn’t find any upcoming events on the website…
- Include SoN Terms of Reference zines and other publications available on the website to reading lists.
- Promote the creative database for collaborations.
- Encourage students to get involved.
- Find inspiration for my teaching in the artefacts.
