Reflection: Deaf-Accessibility for Spoonies

Reflection: Deaf-Accessibility for Spoonies

Another interesting example of an art practice whose concept centres around the idea of visualising an invisible disability. ‘Seeing is believing’ seems to be an effective methodology for disability activism.

A performance piece, where pain is the theme, the main character, the cause and the consequence.

‘The social model of disabled as the opposite of ‘enabled’ rather than ‘unable’.’

Barokka, 2017, p.388

‘Homogenised way human bodies are assumed to fit into capitalist infrastructure, including the neo-liberal structure of arts organisations and funding.’

Barokka, 2017, p.391

Difficult text to reflect on though. I feel there’s too much to unpack and yet I don’t know where to start. I suppose starting with intersectionality, which I understand how she applied it into her self-reflection. But I’m really struggling with this one. Maybe a text to revisit when I’m ready for it.
